Blog – #ConversationStarters: What role has colonialism played in your personal life?

Posted on July 26, 2017 by MCA Team in Events.

During Vivid Sydney celebrations in June, we launched Conversation Starters, an event seeking to start an honest conversation with questions that define our global situation. We asked our visitors to answer questions that were challenging and sometimes uncomfortable, and we were humbled to read their thoughtful and brave responses.

One of our Conversation Starters cards asked, “What role has colonialism played in your life?” This question encouraged our visitors to reflect on the society in which we live. We’re a multi-cultural society; we have diverse backgrounds and we’ve been affected by colonialism in different ways. Our question allowed our visitors to share their own experiences. Here are a few of their answers.

Conversation Starters was inspired by artist Kader Attia, whose work is in its final days at the MCA. Attia’s practice explores themes of power, fear and colonialism through powerful artworks. Come see the exhibition before it says goodbye on 30 July.
